Simplifying Childcare Funding

Step-by-step guidance is available to help parents access the various funding options. These opportunities are intended to streamline the childcare process and help families make informed decisions about early years care.
Stretched Funding Hours
To accommodate different family schedules, there is an option to 'stretch' funded childcare hours across up to 51 weeks, rather than being limited to the standard 38 weeks of term time. By spreading the hours throughout the year, the weekly funded allocation decreases, supporting routine and offering greater flexibility for parents.
Recognising that each family's schedule is unique, there is an option to 'stretch' funded childcare hours across up to 51 weeks instead of the standard 38 weeks of term time. By spreading the hours over a longer period, families can use fewer funded hours per week, supporting a regular routine for the child while allowing parents to balance work and family responsibilities more effectively.
Examples of Stretched Childcare Funding
Overview of 30 Hours Childcare Funding
The government’s 30 Hours Childcare Funding initiative is designed to offer working families significant support with childcare costs. Beginning in September 2025, eligible families will receive up to 30 hours of funded childcare each week, starting from when their child is 9 months old and continuing until the child reaches school age. This measure aims to enable more parents to return to work, bridging the gap between home and employment, while ensuring young children have access to quality care.
Flexibility with Stretched Funding Hours
Recognising that no two families’ schedules are alike, the funding programme allows parents to ‘stretch’ their funded hours across the calendar year. Instead of being limited to the traditional 38 term-time weeks, families can distribute their hours over up to 51 weeks. This approach offers greater flexibility, enabling fewer weekly funded hours but ensuring coverage for more of the year. As a result, children enjoy a consistent routine, and parents are better able to balance work commitments with family life.
